Why You Need A Website Security Certificate

If there were any doubts about whether to get a security certificate for your web site then this message from Trustico, one of the world’s biggest certificate suppliers will help.

Address = http: Google Chrome will show NOT SECURE to every visitor from May 2018.

Address = https: Web site is secure (no message).

In short, Trustico is replacing (free of charge) every certificate that is not trusted by Google.

Trustico Message

Recently we wrote to you to let you know that we are no longer offering Symantec, GeoTrust, RapidSSL and Thawte branded SSL Certificates. Over the coming months these SSL Certificates will be distrusted by Google Chrome and will fail to function correctly.

As the above-mentioned brands shall be distrusted by Google Chrome, it’s important that you replace with SSL Certificates that are trusted by all web browsers.

To enable a free replacement, you’ll receive an e-mail report shortly if you have affected SSL Certificates.

Certificate Advice

I do apologise if I appear to be going on and on about certificates, but let me explain.

For a start, this is huge.  This Google direction will significantly change the internet and have a significant impact of visitors to your web site.  Visitors to non-secure web sites will be spooked.  Generally people are wary and security conscious, and while you know your website is ok, they don’t, and logic says they will leave.

What’s the point of having a web site if a percentage of visitors leave?

A security certificate costs anywhere between AU$65 and AU$385.  The cost includes the certificate and installation.  There are 1 year, 2 year, 3 year certificates, transferrable if the web site (www – address) is moved to a different server.

What Next?

The alternatives are:

  • Contact your hosting company and order a security certificate to be installed.
  • Purchase a certificate and request an IT professional to install it
  • Consider hosting that includes a certificate (like us <wink> see below)

Hosting (including AutoSSL)

A security certificate has always been an add-on, in fact, 98% of hosting companies still charge for certificates and installation.

All Ripefruit hosting plans include a 100% secure SSL Security Certificate ($185.00) at no extra cost.
