Laptop Cooling Fan

I first noticed it last night.. a whirring noise coming from my new laptop. My new DELL, just a few weeks old already has an issue. I Googled the problem and discovered a few things.

  1.  Installing Dell Power Manager would significantly improve my Dell XPS 15 by better managing things like battery useage and power settings. After downloading and installing it, selecting “Quiet” did the trick. I understand “Cool” works as well. This is important: do not leave Dell Power Manager on “Optimized” Thermal settings.
  2. Adding an external cooling fan would help long term.  A few people have said be careful what you buy.  Some fans are quitee noisy.  Apparently the fans that sit flat underneath the laptop are considered the noisiest and least efficient.  The fans that have an adjustible height setting, while not looking particuarly good, provide optimal cooling performance with a silent fan.

I’ve just ordered one from eBay so I will let you know how it goes.
