Are you considering hosting with Xilo Hosting in the UK? Well, think again…
Some may consider this review unfair, but it is stated as an experience we felt people should know about.
In June 2006 we set-up a XR4 Package and a year later (2007) upgraded to a XR5 package (why, I’ll never know), and thats when the fun and games commenced.
Give me a break!
Before I give you 3 good reasons why you should NEVER (ever) host with Xilo, I’ll explain our background and experience. Ripefruit have leased servers (shared and VPS) in Australia, United States and the U.K since 1998. Most systems are Unix coupled with WHM and cPanel configurations. We host roughly 3,000 client web sites along with around 80 of our own.
Do we know anything about hosting… well, if the experience above is not good enough for you, then don’t bother reading on.
Without getting into the ‘we said, they said’ drama’s of the last 6 years (2012), here are 3 main reasons why you should never host at Xilo:
WHM/cPanel Configuration – Xilo dictate their own unique configurations that do not allow you to manage your hosting as with “every’ other server operation.
Example: no Backups – this marvellous cPanel functionality is simply not available and you have to manually backup.
Server load – In 2008 we got this rather strange email saying that one of our sites was using too many resources and to remove it from the server. We host mirror versions of this site on other servers without an issue, and some sites are much much larger than this one. We introduced a ‘display maximum’ for each page which resolved the issue but again, this was the only server that had an issue.
Termination – they exercise a termination contract that requires 30 days notice or they charge you the difference.. unbelievable.
I have not mentioned issues like Security Certificate installation, downtime*, register_global changes, payment issues (they don’t like transfer) and a customer service attitude that plainly ‘stinks’.
Its basically, Xilo way or the highway. Well, for us it was the highway and in June 2012 we departed to a server in the US.. whew.
I read somewhere where Xilo is a one-man operation run from a bedroom in Sheffield with the missus making cups of tea. Well, that would explain the unusual way of dealing with their customers.
We continue to offer first-class hosting but on servers that are operated and maintained by professional data centres that respond with helpful advice and service.
* Our (Xilo) hosting server was offline due to a server-side technical issue for approximately 18 hours (2009).
You can either host with..
Seems we are not the only one…
